Best AI for students in 2026: the honest comparison

Everyone tells you to “use AI” as if it were a single tool. In reality, the one that helps you revise for a biology exam isn’t necessarily the one that finds reliable papers for your thesis, or the one that teaches you to code. We checked, as of September 27, 2026, the prices, limits and privacy settings of the tools students actually use, one use case at a time.

In short: the core trio is still free: ChatGPT with its study mode, Claude with its Learning style, and Gemini, plus Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) for working on your own course material with citations. For literature searches, Semantic Scholar and Elicit have solid free tiers; for languages, DeepL; for maths, Wolfram|Alpha; for code, GitHub Copilot stays free for verified students. None of them replaces your own method: switch on the “coach” modes, opt out of training on your data where you can, and check every source.

How we judged

Four questions for every tool: is it useful for free, can it act as a coach (ask questions, give hints, correct you) rather than do the work, does it show its sources, and what happens to what you type? The general-purpose assistants

ChatGPT

The free tier gives you unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna, but limited uploads, deep research and memory, according to OpenAI’s pricing page. Its big asset for studying is study mode, launched on July 29, 2025, free tier included: Socratic questions, hints and knowledge checks. You turn it on from the tools menu (“Study and learn”).

The weakness is well known: Leah Belsky, OpenAI’s VP of Education, told TechCrunch that there is no way to lock a student into this mode, so one click takes you back to ready-made answers. Above the free tier, ChatGPT Go is available in every country where ChatGPT is, but may include ads; Plus costs $20 a month.

Claude

Claude’s free plan includes web search, file creation, code execution, memory and connectors, per Anthropic’s pricing page. Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually ($200), excluding tax, and includes Claude Code. Since August 14, 2025, the “Learning” style has been open to everyone: Claude guides you instead of answering outright, Engadget reported. Drew Bent, Anthropic’s education lead, framed it as a way to make the chatbot more of a collaborative tool than an answer machine. Downside: free quotas run out quickly on long documents.

Gemini

Gemini is free with a Google account. The student offer (a year of Google AI Plus in most countries) adds doubled usage limits, “study notebooks” built from your course material, interactive visualizations and Gemini Live for spoken practice. Its real strength, Gemini Notebook, comes further down.

Mistral Vibe (formerly Le Chat)

The French company’s Le Chat has been called Vibe since late May 2026, according to heise online; accounts and conversations carried over (Mistral). The free tier limits messages and web searches; Pro costs €14.99 or $14.99 a month excluding tax, and $5.99 for verified students, for up to twelve months (Mistral pricing). Revising: summaries, quizzes, flashcards

The best fit is Gemini Notebook, the new name of NotebookLM: the old address now redirects to notebook.google. Upload your PDFs, slides or YouTube videos, then generate flashcards or quizzes at the difficulty you choose. You mark what you got right or wrong, can retry only the missed cards, and export everything as CSV. Heads-up: since September 2, 2026, usage limits are based on compute, with a quota that refreshes every five hours up to a weekly cap.

Other options: ChatGPT’s study mode quizzes, and Perplexity’s Learn Mode, included in its $10-a-month Education Pro plan (SheerID). Whatever the tool, answer before you look at the solution: that’s retrieval practice.

Understanding a course

For a chapter that won’t click, prefer a tool that answers from your own material. Gemini Notebook answers from your sources, with inline citations, in more than 80 languages. Study mode and the Learning style ask follow-up questions instead of spelling out the answer. The best test is still explaining the concept in your own words: the Feynman technique.

Writing with a coach, without cheating

The rule: you write, the AI critiques. Ask for feedback on the clarity of a paragraph or the strength of an argument, never for the text you’ll hand in. For language polishing, DeepL Write helps, but its free version uses your texts to train its models for a limited period (DeepL privacy policy).

Before any graded work, check your institution’s rules (our look at university policies). AI detectors often get it wrong (our investigation): keep your drafts and cite AI when you used it.

Literature search

• Semantic Scholar: free, built by the non-profit institute Ai2, it indexes more than 200 million papers, according to its About page.
• Elicit: the free Basic plan offers unlimited search across more than 138 million papers, summaries and chat with papers; Plus costs $11 a month billed annually (Elicit pricing).
• Consensus: search is free, and every result links back to a peer-reviewed paper, according to the company. We couldn’t verify its paid plans.
• Perplexity and Gemini Notebook: the first for a cited first pass, the second to query the corpus you’ve already gathered.

A general chatbot can invent a reference that looks perfect: check every DOI (our APA, ISO 690 and Vancouver guide).

Maths and science

Wolfram|Alpha computes for free, but without step-by-step solutions; the student Pro plan costs €5.25 a month, billed €63 a year. To understand a method, study mode or the Learning style do better. In lab work, get your reasoning checked, not just your number: the incertitudes-mesure skill applies the reference GUM method for measurement uncertainty.

Languages

DeepL Pro costs €7.49 a month for the individual plan billed annually, with a 30-day free trial. Texts sent to the Pro version are deleted after processing and aren’t used to improve the service, per its privacy policy. For speaking practice, ChatGPT’s voice mode (limited on the free tier) and Gemini Live let you hold a conversation. And rather than having text translated for you, ask the AI to critique your own translation choices.

Code

GitHub Copilot stays free for verified students through the Copilot Student plan created in March 2026: unlimited code completions and, since June 1, 200 AI credits a month for chat and agents (GitHub). Premium models are now only reachable through automatic model selection (GitHub Education).

Cursor has a free Hobby plan and a Pro plan at $20 a month excluding tax (Cursor pricing); the free Pro year for students is gone, replaced by promotions at events (Cursor). Claude Code, included in Claude Pro, has a Learning style that leaves some pieces of code for you to write. Always review the packages an AI wants to install (the slopsquatting trap).

Presentations

On Gamma, the free plan gives you a stock of credits that doesn’t refill and 10 slides per prompt; Plus brings 1,000 credits a month (Gamma help). By default, content from individual accounts may be used to train its models, but you can opt out (Gamma). Another route: Microsoft 365 Personal, with Copilot in PowerPoint, is 50% off for verified students (Microsoft). But slick slides won’t rescue a badly structured defense.

Organization

Notion gives students the Education Plus plan for free with a school email address (Notion), but Notion AI is only a trial there: the full agent starts with the Business plan, at €19.50 a month in the EU (Notion pricing). For exam season, see our backward-planning method.

Your data: settings to change on day one

• ChatGPT: turn off “Improve the model for everyone”; temporary chats may be kept for up to 30 days for safety (OpenAI).
• Claude: since August 28, 2025, you choose whether your chats are used for training. If you allow it, retention goes up to five years; otherwise it stays at 30 days (Anthropic).
• Gemini: human reviewers look at some conversations, and Google asks you not to enter anything confidential. Auto-delete defaults to 18 months, and reviewed chats are kept for up to three years (Google).
• Gemini Notebook: your sources aren’t used for training unless you submit feedback (Google).
• Mistral Vibe: your chats are used for training by default, but you can opt out at any time (Mistral).

General AI isn’t enough: skills and connectors

A general assistant improvises its method in every conversation and can invent a plausible reference. GetPack builds two add-ons for that.

A skill is a set of instructions the assistant follows every time: a fixed method. Our take: start with the free trio and Gemini Notebook, fix your privacy settings on day one, and only pay for a subscription, just one, if you genuinely hit a limit. Always switch on the mode that makes you do the work: quiz before solution, hints before answers, feedback on your text rather than text written for you. The best AI for your studies isn’t the most powerful one: it’s the one you use as a coach.

What’s the best free AI for revising?

Gemini Notebook, because it works on your own course material and generates flashcards and quizzes that track your mistakes. ChatGPT’s study mode is a good complement for explanations. Either way, answer before you check the solution.

ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini: which should I pick for my studies?

All three are free and have a mode that guides instead of answering. Try them on the same chapter for a week and keep the one whose explanations work for you. Outside the US, Gemini’s student offer (a year of AI Plus in more than 140 markets) is the most generous one right now.

Is using AI for homework cheating?

It depends on how you use it and on your institution’s rules. Getting explanations, questions or corrections is generally accepted; handing in AI-written text isn’t. Check your program’s policy and cite AI when you use it.

Which AI finds reliable sources for a thesis?

Start with Semantic Scholar or Elicit, which search real paper databases, then check every reference at the source. Never copy a reference from a chatbot without opening the paper.
